Job Description
NATURE OF THE WORK
Under the direction of the Chief Building Official, the Building Inspector is responsible for conducting a variety of residential, commercial, and industrial building inspections and enforcing compliance with building codes and related city codes and regulations.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
Inspects residential, commercial and industrial buildings for compliance with currently adopted State and local code and standards; inspects building projects from start-to-finish including a variety of structures, plumbing, electrical, and mechanical; reviews plans to ensure buildings are constructed according to the approved plans; Works closely with city employees, contractors and the public to answer questions and resolve problems; answer questions from contractors, laborers, and the general public regarding building codes and construction processes; may perform plan checks and review submitted building documents and plans; may investigate code violations and assist in code violation abatement/zoning code enforcement; other duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, ABILITIES, AND SKILLS
Knowledge of:
•Construction methods, building practices, building standards and codes.
•Types of building plans, schematics and engineering drawings;
•Enforcement methods related to codes and regulations;
•Record keeping and report writing
Ability to:
•Perform inspections on construction sites.
•Provide excellent customer service.
•Establish and maintain effective communication and working relationships with contractors, engineers, construction laborers, co-workers, and the general public.
•Organize and track multiple projects at the same time.
•Explain complex rules, laws, and ordinances in an easy-to-understand manner.
Skill in:
•Experience reading and interpreting codes, construction documents, engineering plans, and specifications.
•Basic word processing (record keeping; report / letter writing);
•Operating work computer and digital handheld devices (for inspections in the field);
•Handling potentially frustrated individuals and difficult situations calmly and professionally.
EDUCATION, LICENSES AND CERTIFICATES, AND EXPERIENCE
•Standard high school diploma.
•Requires a valid State of Utah Driver's License
* Inspector 1
ICC Certified and State of Utah Limited Inspector license in at least one area of residential inspection (plumbing, electrical, mechanical, building) AND 0-2 years of relevant inspection experience.
Range 17 ($26.12 to 39.18/hr.)
*Inspector 2
ICC Certified in all four areas of residential or commercial inspection (plumbing, electrical, mechanical, building) and State of Utah Combination Inspector license AND 2-5 years of relevant inspection experience.
Range 18 ($27.61 to 41.33/hr.)
*Inspector 3
ICC Certified Combination Inspector (commercial & residential), State of Utah Combination Inspector License, AND 5+ years of relevant inspection experience with expertise in inspection of large commercial & industrial projects.
Range 19 ($29.13 to 43.65/hr.)
WORKING ENVIRONMENT
•Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings at construction sites and in various weather conditions.
•Physical demands may include considerable walking, walking on uneven ground, standing, stooping, sitting, reaching, safely using a ladder, climbing, etc.
•Talking, hearing, and seeing are required in the daily performance of duties.
•Operating a city vehicle for local travel is required in the course of performing job functions.
•Typical office environment for daily use of a computer and building permit/plan review.
